Distributed Power and Heat Generation (CHP / CCHP)
Microturbines are compact gas turbines, typically ranging in output from 1 kW to 500 kW. They generate electricity by continuously burning gaseous or liquid fuels to drive a high-speed turbogenerator. As distributed-generation systems, they can supply power—and, when configured for combined heat and power, useful heat—close to the point of consumption.
Key Advantages of Microturbines
– High overall energy efficiency: Recuperated-cycle designs use exhaust heat to preheat incoming air. When combined with heat recovery in a CHP system, overall efficiency can exceed 85%, depending on the system design and operating conditions.
– Compact, single-shaft design: In many configurations, the compressor, turbine and generator share one shaft. This reduces the number of moving parts and eliminates the need for a gearbox.
– Low maintenance requirements: Fewer mechanical components can mean reduced wear and less frequent maintenance compared with reciprocating-engine systems.
– Low emissions: Continuous combustion can help reduce emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). Actual emissions depend on the fuel, design and operating conditions.
– Fuel flexibility: Microturbines can be designed to operate on fuels such as natural gas, diesel, biogas and certain associated gases, subject to fuel quality and system requirements.
– On-site power generation: Their compact, modular design makes them suitable for industrial facilities, remote sites and applications where local power generation is beneficial.
